Porsche announced today that they will be returning Le Mans with a works-run LMP1 prototype in 2014. Porsche has claimed 16 overall victories the last of which was in 1998 with the 911 GT1. Porsche also had the factory-backed-Penske-run RS Spyder sports prototype from 2006 - 2008.
"Motorsport was always an essential part of the Porsche brand, so for us it was only a matter of time before we returned as a factory to the top league of racing. Porsche's successes in Le Mans are unrivalled. We want to follow up on this with the 17th outright victory." said Matthias Muller, President of the Executive Board at Porsche AG.
And in the footsteps of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, Porsche is hoping that this new car will use hybrid power. That technology, however, is dependent upon the rules and regulations of the class come 2014.
